What are starting contact lens parameters?

Starting contact lens parameters are the ordered sphere, and cylinder and axis when toric, after vertex, optional spherical equivalent, and 0.25 D rounding.

Starting parameters are the calculator output before trial-lens evaluation: ordered optical values as worn at the corneal plane. They are not a finished contact lens prescription.

The following three values make up that starting set:

  • An ordered sphere per eye
  • Cylinder and axis, present only when a toric lens is planned
  • The vertex distance the arithmetic assumed, in millimeters (12 mm by default)

They are not four prescription fields a glasses Rx never contained:

  • Base curve
  • Diameter
  • Material or manufacturer
  • An FTC contact lens prescription issued after a completed fitting

Are glasses prescriptions the same as contact lens prescriptions?

A glasses prescription is not the same as a contact lens prescription.

Glasses sit about 12 to 14 mm in front of the cornea. A contact lens sits on the cornea, so its vertex is essentially zero. That plane change is why the glasses number is not the contact lens number. A contact lens prescription also adds geometric and material fields a spectacle Rx does not contain.

The following table compares fields on each prescription type. Sphere, cylinder, and axis appear on both when astigmatism is written. Power on the contact lens side remains a starting value until a fitter confirms it on eye.

Patient aside (Grade 8–9)

Your glasses do their work about 12 mm away from your eye. A contact does the same job sitting right on it. Closing that gap changes the power, which is why the two numbers differ. Don't order lenses from a converted number. A licensed fitter still chooses base curve, diameter, and brand on eye.

Which fields does a US contact lens prescription require that a glasses Rx omits?

A US contact lens prescription includes power, base curve, diameter when appropriate, and material or manufacturer after a completed fitting.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Buying Contact Lenses page, a valid prescription contains enough information for a seller to fill it. The following items sit on that list:

  • Patient name, examination date, issue date after a contact lens fitting, and expiration date
  • Prescriber name, address, phone, and fax
  • Power of the prescribed lenses
  • Material and/or manufacturer
  • Base curve or appropriate designation
  • Diameter, when appropriate
  • Private-label manufacturer and trade names when those apply

The Federal Trade Commission Contact Lens Rule, as described on that FDA page, requires eye-care providers to give customers copies of their contact lens prescriptions once the lens fitting is complete. A calculator number is produced before that fitting. It is starting parameters. It is not the FTC prescription. According to the FDA Types of Contact Lenses page, you can buy contact lenses only if you have a current, valid prescription. According to the American Optometric Association Contact Lens Safety page, the FDA regulates contact lenses as Class II and Class III medical devices. All contact lenses, including cosmetic lenses, require a prescription from an eye doctor.

Why does spectacle power differ from contact lens power at the corneal plane?

Spectacle power differs from contact lens power because vertex distance moves the lens from about 12 to 14 mm in front of the cornea to the corneal plane.

Vertex distance is the space between the back of the spectacle lens and the cornea. A contact lens sits on the cornea, so its vertex is essentially zero. Wikipedia’s Vertex distance page and the ODReference Vertex Distance Calculator use Fc = Fs ÷ (1 − d × Fs), with d in meters (0.012 at 12 mm). This page names that formula. Glasses power is spectacle-plane power. Contact lens starting power is corneal-plane power after vertex compensation.

When does vertex compensation change the ordered sphere?

Vertex compensation becomes clinically important once meridional powers are at or above about ±4.00 D.

According to the ODReference Contact Lens Conversion Calculator and the ODReference Vertex Distance Calculator, the difference below that gate is often smaller than a 0.25 D manufacturing step. Even Realities and ContactsDirect use the same ±4.00 D / over 4 diopter split. A small vertex change is still not a full contact lens prescription. Base curve, diameter, and material remain unmeasured.

For minus spectacle meridians, effective power increases at the cornea, so the starting contact lens is often less minus. Can a glasses prescription convert into a contact lens prescription?

A glasses prescription converts into starting contact lens parameters, not a contact lens prescription.

Can You Convert a Glasses Prescription to Contact Lenses? (12 September 2025) states you cannot safely or accurately convert a glasses prescription to a contact lens prescription on your own. Feel Good Contacts states you cannot directly convert a glasses prescription to a contact lens prescription, and you cannot use a glasses prescription to calculate a contact lens prescription. ContactsDirect states it is not possible to do a complete conversion. Those three pages are correct about a full Rx.

Power is the part that does convert. Spectacle SPH, CYL, and axis enter as written. Vertex compensation by meridian, optional spherical equivalent after vertex when a spherical lens is intended, and rounding to 0.25 D return starting ordered power. Spherical equivalent is SE = Sphere + (Cylinder ÷ 2). It is not a substitute for indicated toric correction. That optical path still omits base curve, diameter, material, and the on-eye trial.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Buying Contact Lenses page, different brands differ in water content and shape. A converted sphere does not pick a SKU. The Johnson & Johnson ACUVUE Fitting Calculator states the company does not prescribe, and that calculator is not a substitute for independent professional judgment. CooperVision’s Toric Calculator page states the calculated theoretical power is a starting point for any manufacturer’s toric lenses and still requires a professional fitting.

What does a licensed contact lens fitting add after the calculator?

A licensed contact lens fitting adds eye-health measurements, a diagnostic trial, and the written prescription the calculator cannot issue.

What to Expect at a Contact Lens Fitting describes a contact lens fitting as usually a 3-step process: the exam, the fitting, and a trial period. A comprehensive eye exam on that page determines an eyeglasses prescription. Additional measurements are required because a contact lens is shaped to the eye’s surface. The following five steps sit after a starting power is calculated:

  1. Complete an eye-health exam and refraction for contact lens wear.
  2. Measure corneal shape with keratometry or topography so base curve and diameter are chosen from those measurements.
  3. Apply a diagnostic trial lens from the starting parameters.
  4. Reassess fit, comfort, and vision after a wear period, then over-refract.
  5. Issue the contact lens prescription after the fitting is complete.

Those five steps produce the FDA fields listed above. Keratometry measures corneal curvature. Corneal topography maps the surface in three dimensions on the Pinnacle fitting page. That page states an irregular cornea (high astigmatism or keratoconus) is a reason a rigid gas permeable lens is considered instead of a soft lens that conforms to the irregular shape. Pinnacle’s conversion article lists four problems an ill-fitting lens can cause: blurry vision, headaches or eye strain, dry irritated eyes, and discomfort. According to the American Optometric Association, improperly worn or fit contact lenses can lead to serious health complications, including infections, corneal edema, and ulcers. This site does not diagnose those conditions.

When do calculators fail and fitting judgment take over?

Calculators fail when the eye or the trial lens does not match the spherical or toric soft-lens assumptions in the conversion.

Starting parameters assume a regular cornea, a stable soft or toric trial, and manufacturing steps of 0.25 D. The following three conditions break those assumptions:

  • Irregular astigmatism or an irregular cornea, where a spherical equivalent or a standard soft toric is the wrong design family
  • Unstable toric rotation, where optical compensation chases a moving axis
  • Indicated toric correction, where spherical equivalent is used as a substitute for cylinder the patient still needs

According to the ODReference Contact Lens Conversion Calculator, spherical equivalent is a clinical compromise when fitting a spherical soft lens over low, regular astigmatism. According to the ODReference Cross-Cylinder and Over-Refraction Calculator, if the fit is unstable, compensating optically for rotation is chasing a moving target. Consider a different base curve, diameter, or lens design before refining power. LARS alone adjusts axis for rotation. It does not resolve induced sphere and cylinder from misalignment. Rotation math stays on the toric and over-refraction tools. The stop rule on this page is: change the fit before chasing the number.

How do you verify starting parameters after the trial lens?

Starting parameters are verified with over-refraction after the trial lens.

Over-refraction is the residual refractive error measured through the trial lens on eye. It verifies power after you convert and calculate. Verify starting parameters on eye in this order:

  1. Apply the diagnostic trial lens using the starting parameters.
  2. Assess centration, movement, and toric rotation before you change power.
  3. Over-refract through the stable lens.
  4. Adjust the next ordered power from that over-refraction.

What do you do after a starting power is calculated?

After a starting power is calculated, convert remaining contact lens parameters, fit the trial on eye, and verify — the number is still not a prescription.

The following five steps keep the session inside convert, calculate, fit, and verify:

  2. Calculate vertex-compensated contact lens power when meridians are high.
  3. Fit a starting toric or multifocal contact lens when cylinder or add is indicated.
  4. Verify power with over-refraction after the trial lens.
